Tell your story through your cake...
Expert: The Artistic Whisk
Not that there’s anything wrong with a beautifully decorated, tasty white wedding cake, but why not use your wedding cake to tell your story and wow your guests? Jovana Boksen, Pastry Chef and owner of The Artistic Whisk, gave us her insight on how to merge your culture and shared interest to have your cake share your love story with your guest in an unexpected way.
Whether your fiancé is your high school sweetheart or the man you met on flight back home, everyone has a unique love story along with their cultural identity. We love the idea of using cultural cake flavors to pay tribute to your cultural roots while your two families become one.
To get some real life examples of what couples have done, Jovana shared her most recent inspired flavor combinations.
“Delicious inspiration can be found from around the globe” as explained Jovana. “Being able to expand outside of the more traditional flavors makes creating the cake such a fun process for me as well as the couple I’m working with, it never gets old!” Jovana loves to meet with couples and bring their cultural background into creating a memorable and delicious cake to match their wedding experience.
“This is an opportunity for couples to take their guests on a flavorful journey, honoring where they have come from and into what makes them a unique couple. I have created cakes nodding to Asia to the Middle East to the Caribbean and many places in between.”
She suggests keeping the flavors true by reaching into each family’s roots to feature a sumptuous cake, maybe to the northern reaches of Italy with a luscious Chocolate Hazelnut Espresso cake, or a Chocolate Chip Cannoli cake. Or, perhaps using an exotic infusion like a Latin-inspired Guava with Cream Cheese for those spicy Latin Lovers!
“For an island inspired wedding, you can give your guests a taste of the islands featuring Jamaican Meyer's Rum infused into the Rum Roasted Pineapple. This makes our Pineapple Coconut cake explode with bright flavor. For this couple we added an additional groom’s cake featuring a Key Lime cake paired with Blueberry crème.”
Jovana recently created an amazing cake reflecting the couple’s Middle Eastern roots by incorporating a subtle Lebanese Pistachio cake. “Asian inspired cakes may include Japanese-inspired Matcha green tea combined with raspberry, or our Earl Grey infused cake with lemon lavender buttercream filling."
Hidden Personal Pops
Not only can you use your cultural background to tell you story, more and more couples are choosing to customize their design to include hints of their personalities and interest. Think about what you have in common: did you meet in college, both enjoy sports, like to travel, share a much loved pet, or do you walk on the nerdy side and enjoy superheros, books or sci-fi television? All of these interest make you who you are can be utilized to create a ‘wow’ moment for your cake.
“I have had the opportunity to bring couples personalities to life with little details on their cakes. From a Harry Potter, Doctor Who mash-up cake, to a World of Warcraft theme cake complete with a castle and dragon, to their favorite sports team logos peaking out behind a Curtin of fondant, couples are wanting to express their uniqueness through the design.”
There are endless ways to create these details. Molding chocolate, rice crispies treats, fontant, editable paint, or event cake toppers and little figurines can be incorperated into the overall theme of the cake.
The possibilities are endless, so go ahead, have some fun with this! We suggest having a phone conversation with your cake artist prior to your tasting to give them enough time to get creative!
